Connection Issues

Postby Gaz_Bot » Sat Dec 05, 2015 7:51 pm

Has anyone else experienced connection issues while playing?
I can't seem to get through a session (maybe 1-3 hours) without the little "Experiencing slow connection" icon appearing.

My PS4 is currently set up wirelessly and I have a feeling my router my be showing its age... Should I try running a wired connection instead?

Just wanted to see if anyone else is in the same boat!

Have not had any connection issues, for what it is worth i am hard wired. the only issue that I have had is if I select a friend from the top list to join our select as buddy, it says I last connection to the network and have to click to reconnect.

I get that message in-game from time to time but that's because my ping is always high, due to the location and the fact I mostly play with North Americans so...
But so far I've been always able to get the matchmaking done real quick.
I run wireless.

Hmm... Maybe it's my old router then. I'm going to wire it first before I spend the money on new hardware.

Could be... another idea would be to switch your DNS to google or open DNS servers.
I have my router set up that way (Open DNS) but for some reason I ran into a bug with the 3DS a week ago and had to put Google's DNS (8.8.8.8 I think?) on the console for the eShop to work normally again.
So just try and use either (Google/Open DNS) on the PS4 settings and see how it goes.

I'm not sure I know how to do that and will that work in Canada?

It will work everywhere.
A DNS server helps your router or otherwise network equipment find IPs around the globe (end user name to IP translation) so usually when you don't set it up you will be using the one assigned by your ISP.
By witching that to OpenDNS or Google DNS, sometimes it will be faster or more reliable.

For instance on the PS3 I never had issues with GTA Online but when I migrated the game data to the PS4 then it'd time out looking for sessions and so on. Switched my router to Open DNS (hadn't done for years) and now everything works fine.

You go to Open DNS website or google "Open DNS IPs" same for Google. Then on your PS4 network settings you go to advanced or wherever and put that into the DNS field. And then check out if it improves anything at all.

Edit

The guy here (last answer) has a mini tutorial and the IPs he uses are the ones of Google.

I get that message too on XB1. It has not affected my gameplay. When it does come up it still shows 3/4 bars and usually goes away so I dont worry about it.

Wired could help.

Played for about two hours today after wiring the connection and no issues! Yay!

The next test will be on Friday night or the weekend when server strain is greater.

Nice, so I guess it's a problem with your WiFi signal, in which case a repeater/router replacement could help.

I don't use cables anymore since this is 2015 but then also my router is close-by. I'm using an AC1750 with custom firmware. I used to have a D-Link (old WiFi model) but then I realised with so many devices connected through it, the memory strain was too hard on it so it couldn't cut it anymore.
If you feel like wiring it is enough then cool. If you feel like getting a replacement I'd advice to install a custom firmware like DD-WRT, if supported, then monitor the memory and CPU and see if it's really not cutting it anymore.
