Your PC Set-up

Postby McMurphy » Wed Aug 25, 2010 4:50 pm

One of the banes of PC gaming, is trying to keep up with the "new standard" of PC capabilities and having it handle new games. What is your PC set-up? How many games on the New Release shelf can you play? What PC Set-up is the most realistic for people who want to play most games out there?

Most of my forum communications and gaming comes from my Dell laptop, which is quite weak in processing power. Windows Vista Basic. Intel Celeron inside.

I'm currently playing Destiny 2, DOOM, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

My PC is a Core2Duo E6600 (2.4 GHz) overclocked to a measly 2.66 GHz. I got 4 GB of PC800 RAM running Windows 7 64-bit and an EVGA nVidia GTX 285 (with a GTX 470 superclocked in the mail....ahhhhhhh).

Other than the OS and the video card the components are about 3 years old. Looking to upgrade to an i7 930 or something similar soon. The CPU is my bottleneck. Even still I haven't had a problem running Fallout 3, Oblivion, Dragon Age, Fear 2, Bioshock 2. When the GTX 470 get's here I'll see how it handles StarCraft II and Metro 2033.

Here's my current setup.

22" (1680 x 1050) Monitor.
Windows 7 Ultimate.
230GBs HDD.
AMD Athlon Dual Core Processor, 3800+.
2GBs RAM.
ATI Radeon 3870 (512MBs VRAM).

Right now i got the main optical drive thats dying on me (reads and writes when it wants, for the most part it can't burn a damn CD without messing it up most of the time) and i need to replace it sooner or later, or when my second optical drive also dies on me. My graphics card is still good, despite being 2+ years old, but i definetly need to upgrade the processor, add in more RAM and get a bigger HDD.

I can play almost any game out there that came out recently, but not maxed up all the way.

I want to upgrade and i'm hoping to during the holidays, but i also want a new 360 Slim....so we'll see, but i'll definetly be playing Diablo III, Dungeon Siege III and a few others i got my eyes set on :D

Random Image of the case I use above ;)

2x24" Samsung 1920x1080 Monitors
Intel i7 OC @ 3.59 ghz (this can get a little iffy)
Standard Gigabyte Motherboard - 2oZ Channels (dont remember the model # offhand)
6 GB Corsair Dominator GT RAM
1.5TB HDD ( 1 x 1tb, 1 x 500gb )
Ati Radeon 5970
On Board HD Sound - Realtek / Audio output through Video card on HDMI out
Creative Gigaworks T20 Series 2 speakers / Creative HS-1200 Headset
Logitech G19 LCD Keyboard / Logitech G9x 5700 dpi mouse / Roccat Kone 3000dpi mouse
Windows 7 Home 64-bit
Roccat Taito Mouse Mat (If you dont know these, get one! Great surface and huge mats)

it was purchased recently enough, and I'm yet to find anything that can put a real strain on it, even crysis at 1920x1080 with everything maxed to hell is really smooth. If I play a fps game at 1080 on one monitor, and a full 1080p bluray movie on the other it slows it down, but yeh I havent really found anything that strains it in single monitor use.

I had a gaming rig for the longest time, I've been PC building and gaming since the original Half-Life. About a year ago though I finally just gave up trying to keep up with the games being released and sold my latest rig to someone on craigslist. It's just easier anymore to go out and buy a console and have an almost guaranteed useful life of 5+ years.
