Destiny 2 - Tips and General Discussion

Postby bdnyy23 » Thu Sep 07, 2017 9:13 am

Ok, so D2 is finally out (at least for the consoles) and I don't know about everyone else but so far I am really enjoying it. Finished up the story (don't worry I won't give out any spoilers and if anyone here is going to, please mark it as such), and I thought it was great. Much better than D1, but guess there wasn't much that was needed to make it better than that - not having to read about the story with Grimoire cards but instead actually playing out the story in the game was a genius idea

I have been trying to avoid any spoilers where I can on the web, so I am stressing out on some things that I probably shouldn't like what I should be doing with all of these tokens, I know that they will increase your rep with the local vendors, but just wondering if they will have a better purpose like maybe trading into Xur or something else so I have been holding off turning them in. Also, the leveling has been going pretty smooth, so I have been holding off on leveling the factions until I reach the soft cap (assuming Bungie will do that again) but what are everyone else's thoughts on that.

Getting exotics and legendary gear at such low light, sorry power level was great but I have not wanted to infuse anything yet as again I have no idea if those resources can be used better elsewhere so I am not using most of them currently. Have you been infusing these as you go or are you holding off as well.

So as for this thread, please post up any general comments you have on the game. Any tips that you have and anything that you find that you think may be of interest to others. I have not found any ghosts or siva shards, not sure if there is anything like that. There have been items that I have found in game that you can investigate, but it doesn't go into much detail after that, like the box of items (which I think were from dead orbit) that can be found. I haven't even taken the time to really explore the social spaces, to busy trying to grind, but if you find anything that you think would be of interest please pass along the info.

I do have a couple quests that I am working on, not sure if these are standard and everyone gets them, but I have a Relics of the golden age (wish I would have kept that exotic engram) and think the other one was Around the Comms (sorry it is at the second step now). Once I know more about them I will post info.

So what does everyone think and what do you have that can help out your fellow GSers (without spoiling anything for them, give them at least a week before you do that ;) )

A suggestion, as you get challenges and progression items that reward legendary rewards would be to hold off doing those as long as possible. Blues are dropping like flies when running around and killing baddies so the legendaries may be useful once everyone hits the soft cap.

Cayde sells some good items, the Scout reports work well, but I have not tried them when in a fire team, so I think it would be even better to use when you are teamed up. The maps of his missing goods worked out well, but they are a bit pricey. In most cases I got four or five items from them including in most cases a weapon, armor, weapon mod and shader or ship.

Has anyone used any of the weapon or armor mods, if so, what are your thoughts and any suggestions for these.

Props to reddit user QurBDO for this very thorough guide. This seems to be pretty spot on so far on how to maximize your time in the game shortly after launch if you are looking to get leveled up for endgame content.

https://reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/com ... ing_guide/

Note: Destiny 2 can be played and enjoyed in many ways, so this guide is not for everyone.
I couldn't get clear information about how power/levels work with the mechanisms for progression in the game, so after a little bit of testing and reading, this is what I've come to understand:
LEVELS
• Leveling 1-20 requires EXP. Most activities in the game give you EXP - the main story, public events, side story, crucible, patrols, lost sectors, and even aimlessly killing mobs. If you just wish to follow keep up with the story, you normally wont have to go out of your way to meet its requirements. There is a small jump in requirement near the end, however - one mission requires level 12, while the one after it requires 15 - so for those levels you might want to look at other sources for EXP, but for the most part the story will give you enough to keep up.
• If you finish the campaign and talk to the final npc at the very end, even if you are level 17/18/19, you will be immediately boosted to level 20.
• Each level 1-20 has a cap in how high Power you can attain in that level; you wont be able to hit 260 Power below level 20. So, there is little to no need to grind for Power in any case before level 20.
• Level 1-20, in the open world, is scaled to the mobs you are fighting and the public events you do, so you can fight next to a leveled 300 Power player with the same potency at level 5 when it comes to open world mobs.

At level 20, you start focusing on leveling Power. There are a few interesting mechanics around this:
• Since Power is the average of all 8 slots of gear you wear, you must always try to focus on and prioritize your weakest slots as you level.
• Blue engrams and Blue drops decrypt from anywhere between -2 to +4 Power level from your overall average Power level.
• Legendary engrams often decrypt beyond +4 levels from your average Power level, up to a softcap of 265 Power.
• You may receive legendary gear that is beyond 265 Power from vendors; that will be mostly likely because it has a +5 attack/defense Legendary mod on the gear already installed. So you may receive up to 270 gear from vendors on rare occasions. You may also receive just the legendary mods on their own that you can insert into your gear to boost its power by +5. The gunsmith drops these legendary mods quite frequently in his rank-up packages.
• Remember to open your engrams as soon as you get them - their Power is determined by your Power the moment you acquired them, instead of your Power when you decrypt them.

Now, for a short guide to efficient power leveling-
• As a fresh level 20 that just beat the campaign, you are free to do any activity to gain more Power. Your best bet at this point is to stow away certain activities that reward gear past the softcap of 260 for later - specifically, do not turn in milestones, nightfall, exotic weapon questlines, or cayde's treasure maps. Instead, focus on activities that reward blue gear. In order of the fastest to the slowest for attaining blue gear, you can do
• Public events: around 1-2 blue pieces, chance of legendary and exotic pieces, glimmer and vendor tokens (20 vendor tokens = 2 legendary pieces). They are by far the fastest if you hop from event to event. However, they can get tedious fairly quickly. Try your best to activate the "Heroic" version of these events as they are more likely to give 2 blue pieces instead of 1 upon successful completion and a potentially higher chance at an exotic.
• Farming treasure chests, killing yellow bar elite wandering mobs, looting lost sectors, looting golden chests -- all are amazing for getting vendor tokens, but are slower on average than spamming public events when it comes to getting blues. However, when you want to get purples, do these more frequently instead for vendor tokens.
• Side story, vanguard strikes, crucible matches - fun original content but quite slow when it comes to amassing a bunch of blues compared to the methods above.

Most of these activities will provide you enough blues over time to get 260. While doing these, remember to occasionally open up faction packages when your gear plateaus to get guaranteed legendaries that boost your average higher and thus get you better blues.
At 260, the softcap for blue gear, you can choose to progress by amassing legendaries.
• Legendaries go to 265, but at times drop at 270 from vendors because they come premodded. You can also add your own mods to your gear to push it to 270.
• If your only goal is to get these vendor legendaries, focus more on farming tokens instead of public events. Public events have a chance at dropping exotics, but at 260-270, you're better off progressing via guaranteed vendor legendaries and mods.

After 270, the only way to progress is by the methods you patiently saved for yourself this entire time, namely:
• Milestones that reward "Powerful Gear" purple engrams. These are on a weekly lockout.
• Exotic weapon quests that reward various exotics that scale beyond 290 light. Do them when your weapon slot is holding you back.
• Nightfall drops. Weekly lockout.
• Possible Cayde treasure map drops.

Once all of those are dried up, you can choose to progress further by
• Farming exotic drops from pubic events, crucible, and strikes. Slow method by the only way to progress outside of weekly lockouts or the raid.

Feel free to add in comments anything I missed in this overview, and I'll add it to the list when I wake up tomorrow.
Cheers all, and remember that Destiny is a game designed for fun; if this powerleveling stuff doesn't feel fun to you, there is no need to do it. More than most other games, Destiny has insane catchup mechanics that might invalidate the efficiency of many of these methods in just a few weeks, especially the 270+ progression bit when the raid is released this Wednesday.

Thanks, I thought the softcap was 250 and that was the max blues would decode, good to know that is actually 260. I hadn't received any blues over 250 yet, but guess I have to just keep on working on them, then I can complete the milestones and turn in faction packages for the legendaries.

I know it is mentioned above, but I will stress as a good tip, if you are running public events you should really try to trigger the heroic versions. Each has a different way to trigger, but it seems that the heroic has a higher chance of dropping exotic engrams. If only everyone else knew the triggers it would be helpful, but guess that will take time. I was farming PE's last night for a little while and was lucky to get two exotic engrams to drop from heroic PE's, most I was not able to trigger the heroic version as blueberries did not know how to trigger them.

A tip for those that like Exotic quests, hold onto your rare or legendary scout rifles as they will be needed to complete a quest. May want to do this with all of the gun types as other exotic quests may require the same thing.

Anyone working on the Mida Mini Tool quest, per Bungies support site please make sure that you have open slots in your energy weapon to avoid losing the item needed to turn in.
Quests
• Mida Mini-tool: We are actively investigating an issue where Mida Mini-tool is not properly sent to Postmaster. When completing the “Enhance!” Quest, please ensure you have multiple inventory slots available in the Energy Weapons category to prevent this issue from occurring.

Here's a nice guide to the "currencies". Not a fan of so many single purpose items. Just give me the XP already.when I pick it up.

Otherwise game feeling pretty good about 3/4 through campaign.

Quick question for those @ lvl 20.........

I'm at lvl 14, and around 135ish power, yet I am only at the Nessus: Six story mission. I've been having fun grinding the EDZ. My question is.....if I keep up grinding till lvl 20, then continue the story missions, will the difficulty scale with my level or will they be easier to play through?

My plan is to plow through to end game, and then roll an alt to go over any of the story that I missed by speeding through.
