Old School RPGs

Do you recall all the wasted hours on the games and consoles of the past? Everything from the first Playstation and the Nintendo 64 to the NES and the Dreamcast is fair "game" here.

Please forgive the lame pun.

Technically, the SNES version is the second game in the entire series. There was an NES version that was never released, despite being nearly completed for American release:

Then, there is the 3rd one in the series made for GBA that never saw the light of day outside of Japan (except for a fan translation that can be found online...not entirely legal):

The Legend of Zelda (if that counts as an RPG)
Shadowgate
Ultima
Final Fantasy
Faxanadu
and something called Times of Lore, or Tales of Lore, or something.

There was also a series for the PC, whose name I can't remember. It's not King's Quest, but it's similar.

HOLY JUMPIN JILIKERS!

There is a fan translation of the game boy mother game?????????

I am gonna need to find that. Earthbound has a dear place in my heart and the characters I still think about to this day. I have always wanted to play another version, but they keep not releasing one or saying they will ever release one. I would hope the 3ds would be sufficient though, and I know people would drop $40 down for that game.

I am gonna google that gba game though.

This could be (if it works) the greatest thing since stringed cheese!

My glory days were spent playing RPGs on the NES and Super Nintendo. These are what I remember:

* 7th Saga
* Chrono Trigger
* Dragon Warrior
* Drakkhen
* the Final Fantasy series (especially FF II and III, AKA IV and VI)
* Paladin's Quest
* Secret of Mana
* Ultima

In the strategy realm:

* Nobunaga's Ambition
* Romance of the Three Kingdoms
* Shingen the Ruler

And my all-time favorite game, which doesn't fit as neatly into the RPG genre:

* Shadowrun

I also remember two action RPGs from Culture Brain that were fun:

* Little Ninja Brothers
* Magic of Scheherezade

How about Act Raiser that was a fun one as well. It combined rpg, sim, side scrolling elements to it's game play. That was a fun game for it's time.

So...you never told us...is it the greatest thing since stringed cheese? Or is it better?

My original RPGing goes way back to Pool of Radiance I think it was, released in 1988. Have always liked RPG's and am constantly amazed at how far theyve come, from turn based to free flowing etc, and of course the graphics. Also loved the eye of the beholder series which would have had to have been one of the 1st First Person RPG's.

My first true RPG was Exile on the Genesis. It had an overworld map though the dungeons were all side-scrolling levels. I didn't know what an RPG was back then but I knew I enjoyed the game.

Later on, I discovered Chrono Trigger using a buddy's SNES. One of my favorites to this day. I also completed Secret of Mana.

On my GBA I played: FF 1, 2, 6, and Golden Sun 1 and 2. I used to own FF 7 but never got past disc 1.

I'm hoping to download Super Mario RPG for the Virtual Console when I get some Wii points.

Xbox players that are fans of old school RPGs, especially the SNES Final Fantasy games, check out "Cthulhu Saves The World" in the Indie Games section of Xbox Live Arcade. its a complete throwback to those early RPGs and only $3 (with good reviews, too)

I don't know if these count, but I actually started out playing text-based adventures, which I think have lots of overlap. I remember the Zork series, of course, and a little game called Soft Porn, which would later be adapted with graphics as Leisure Suit Larry. My cousin and I were way too young to play that one, but it didn't stop us.
