Old School RPGs

Do you recall all the wasted hours on the games and consoles of the past? Everything from the first Playstation and the Nintendo 64 to the NES and the Dreamcast is fair "game" here.

Please forgive the lame pun.

Definitely a great, great, fantastically awesome game. They just dropped it in the ShopChannel, too. Time to relive those days!!!

I know this will sound awful but the only thing I remember about Faxanadu is that you could make the character stand in such a way (maybe on a table?) that it looked like someone was fellating him as he talked. May have been a shopkeeper or something.

That was pretty funny when I was 12.

Ahhh, the memories. I had some fun/bad (both, in equal measure) times with the action-RPG Battle of Olympus on the NES. Also some mostly pretty bad times with Shadowgate.

The first RPG I played that I'd consider a 'real' RPG was Secret of Mana. To this day it's one of my favourite RPGs, and indeed one of my favourite games in general. I played some other SNES RPGs too, including Secret of Evermore (which I was never very impressed with, for some reason) and Illusion of Time (Illusion of Gaia everywhere else in the world).

The only one I remember coming close to Secret of Mana's greatness is Terranigma. One day I need to unpack my SNES and play that again. I spent so long trying to beat Bloody Mary in that game. One point of damage per hit? ONE point?! I was hugely relieved when the official Nintendo magazine began running a player's guide to the game, and I waited eagerly for the installment that covered Bloody Mary so I could finally know what the trick to beating her was. I knew I was missing something. And what did the guide say? "Hit her until she dies." Thanks. Thanks very much.

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. I know its hated by a lot of... uh... true? FF fans but I thought it was a nice little simplified RPG

Did anyone else ever try playing Lord of the Rings on the Super Nintendo? The brownest RPG ever!

CarlMuir,

Have you ever played the SNES version of Shadowrun? It's my all-time favorite.

Hell yeah and it was good except for almost having to have the Freeze spell with those 2 trolls at the fridge on the boat (if you remember), and I liked the Genesis version more for independent runs you could do on corporations. It gave a bit more purpose to loading up on npc party members than just using them for the main and only quest on the SNES one.
