Playstation One or Nintendo 64?

Do you recall all the wasted hours on the games and consoles of the past? Everything from the first Playstation and the Nintendo 64 to the NES and the Dreamcast is fair "game" here.

Please forgive the lame pun.

Yeah, that was a big weakness of the N64 - no RPGs to speak of.

I had to go the 64 as I never had a PS, and besides, I loved my Zelda and Turok!

I had both, but had to side with 64... Zelda, Turok, Perfect Dark and lets not forget Goldeneye! 8-)

Nintendo 64 definitely had a handful of AAA games...Super Mario 64, OoT, Majora's Mask, Starfox 64, Goldeneye, the original Turok, Pilotwings 64 and SSB were definitely among the best games of that time period. Ocarina was possibly THE best game of that 32/64-bit era, and still stands as one of the best games ever made IMO.

However, I still have to give my vote here to the PSone. For one, the visuals in PSone titles definitely improved as the system aged. Just look at what Eidos was able to do with Soul Reaver if you want proof...what they were able to squeeze out of that aging tech was nothing less than amazing. That the PSone offered CD-quality sound from the get go was important, as well. The N64 was held back, especially towards the end of that console race, by the fact that the storage space on their proprietary cartridges was quite limited, and as such the audiovisual quality of N64 games never really progressed. Just blurry textures and garbled audio abound. Games like Zelda and Paper Mario looked great, of course, but that had more to do with art style than technical prowess IMO.

And while the N64 games I mentioned are definitely really heavy hitters, they just can't compare to the sheer quantity of fantastic games that the PSone offered games. Warhawk, the Twisted Metal series, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy series, Destruction Derby, Soul Reaver, Tomb Raider, Marvel vs. Capcom, Tekken...the list goes on and on and on, you get my point. PSone definitely had the N64 beat in the sheer number of games that gamers wanted to play, and for that, it gets my vote.

True PS0ne had the graphics and the grand new concepts but N64 started expanding on something more important to me. Multiplayer. It increased the idea of 1 to 2 gamers to 3-4 simultaneously. Many great hours were had for me and my 2 bros or 3 buddies in GoldenEye or Royal Rumbles in Wrestlemania. I like to think that was a hint to developers, hey I want to play with more people and less AI. Im sure we would have ended up with online play but perhaps N64 helped push towards that direction. Yes PS had a multiplayer adapter and some games *not as many as N64 did* that you could have 4 people. I enjoyed PS1 solo player games like resident evil, MGS, Final Fantasys, oh the list goes on. But when I wanted to really game it came down to a multiplayer especially considering my house consisted of 3 boys and great dad who loved to play those silly games with us *though he wasnt very good at them* :D

So my vote goes to N64

I do love Zelda, but I don't consider it an RPG. Even if I did, two Zelda games is a very limited selection of RPGs for an entire console life span. Being an RPG player, the Playstation had a lot more going for it.

So you prefered the turn based RPG

Not necessarily. But Zelda is more of a puzzley thing than an RPG, in my mind. I suppose RPGs for me were defined by the SNES: Secret of Mana, Terranigma, Illusion of Gaia, that sort of thing.
