laptop with discrete GPU

Postby txrocketman » Thu Aug 24, 2017 8:58 am

Wondering if anyone has tips/experience getting a discrete AMD GPU on a laptop working as primary graphics. I've got AMD cpu with onboard graphics (512 mb) + 4gb Radeon card. Would've figured AMD + AMD would be easy to configure, but consistently get games using only onboard graphics. Laptop is a Dell and bios locked where I can't disable the onboard graphics. AMD software settings all set for high performance (discrete vs onboard) graphics but doesn't seem to do anything. Wondering if there are any last things to try before signing my life away to a long phone call with Dell tech support this weekend.

Ps I'm not trying to play top of line games, just some lighter steam stuff.

Well it's an AMD so no nvidia.control panel, but equivalent (AMD Radeon settings).

In Windows, the display adapter appears to be software set by AMD software. Ideal would be to disable onboard graphics with bios but InstdeH2O bios locks you out of that. Dell is going to have computer for other warranty hardware issue and claims they'll figure it out then, but not holding my breath. No diagnostic errors for them to troubleshoot because card is recognized and graphics work (just very poorly).

in the AMD software there should be a setting to change it. you may just have to look around in the software to find it.

I do have AMD settings set correctly, just doesn't seem to swap based on frame rate 15 fps in Dreadnought, and in case of paragon explicitly noting that only 512 Mb graphics memory.
