The One Where Minecraft takes over my gaming life...

Permanent Linkby Handil on Mon Feb 23, 2015 9:56 am

Well, it's raining today here at work. When you work at a golf course, that means it's SLOOOOOOWWWWWWWWW....
Painfully slow.

It's especially painful in light of my recent delving into Minecraft, which has sunk its' hooks deep into me.

It all started innocently enough... I had bought my niece a copy of the game for 360 and watched her play a bit on creative here and there. It all seemed somewhat interesting, but didn't really spark any desire to play. Well, she lives a couple hours away, but was coming to visit. I saw that it was on sale for $5 on the Xbox One, and figured I may as well pick it up so we could tool around while she was down.

Not wanting to be a complete n00b in front of my 7 year old niece, I made myself sit down and fire up a survival mode to familiarize myself with the game.

Everything was sun light and wood punching! Then, it began to dim, though I really didn't think much of it.

Soon, however, it was dark. I couldn't see. There were strange sounds coming from...

The One Where I Won A PS4!

Permanent Linkby Handil on Sun Feb 01, 2015 8:06 am

So happy! As some of you may know, I live in sunny Southern California. To me, snow is something you drive to, not something that naturally occurs at home. I live in a wonderful area where I can be at either the beach or in the snow in an hour during the "winter".

So a few weeks ago, it snowed. SNOWED! A few inches even! It had been literally a DECADE since snow had touched the ground here in Temecula, and that was less then an inch. It just so happened that I was scheduled to open the golf shop that morning. Once I arrived at work, I was inspired by the beauty! I ran outside (really I walked gingerly, scared of slipping) and took 15 or 20 photos.

I showed these photos to coworkers and friends, and everyone loved them. The VP of the hotel division (which golf falls under) came up, shook my hand, and told me he was proudly using my photo as his desktop. I know, I know, not a big deal, unless you know the guy.

About a week later, I saw a memo in the company flier. It said...

The One Where I Cheese Crota

Permanent Linkby Handil on Mon Dec 22, 2014 3:02 pm

So, I was doing my best to solo Crota's End last night when I was invited to a Crota Cheese group. I say cheese, but if you are familiar with the method, it is glitching and most would consider it cheating (I do). For the first time, I felt like I was doing something wrong.

Now, mind you, I cheesed Atheon and all of the VoG after completing it legitimately. I have soloed Crota's End up to the deathsinger, or whatever her name is (and completed the entire raid legitimately). These have all felt like creative use of systems Bungie left in place or was too lazy to thoroughly test.

Using an exploding lantern to shoot me across a map seems like a creative use of in game mechanics, not cheating, to me. But the Crota fight... having a player quit the game to freeze the main boss in place, and then wailing away at him... feels entirely different. There is *some* skill needed to make it work, I guess, but only maybe 25% of the skill it takes to do it legit.

Anyway, after it was all said and done,...

The One Where I Remember Molten Core.

Permanent Linkby Handil on Wed Dec 10, 2014 9:41 am

I played vanilla WoW. I was hard core. I was elite. I was the best damn tank on my server. I main tanked Onyxia for the server first kill. I main tanked Molten Core for the first Ragnaros kill. I was second on my server to have a full set of Tier 1 gear (my off tank being the first).

For those of you who didn't play WoW at the time, here is how the inital Molten Core raids went....

Gather 40 players who are willing to spend 6-8 hours a day, 3 days a week raiding. Organize them into group which make sense and can support each other. Begin raid.

Step inside to see two giants. Pull giants. Die. All 40 of you. Reset.
**hours pass**
We did it!

Pull second set of mobs.

You get the idea.

It was literally weeks (months?) before I got a single piece of raid gear, and it was a shitty belt. Actually it was awesome compared to the belt I had, but it was still a belt.

There was no cheesing it. If an exploit was found, it was patched...

The One Where I Begin My Rant.

Permanent Linkby Handil on Wed Dec 10, 2014 9:23 am

Since the second week of playing Destiny, I keep hearing in raids and reading on various forums all about how Destiny is so bad. How long it takes to get a full raid set. So may people cry and whine and curse Bungie. Even here on our own forums the "losing interest" thread gets posted to weekly.

Here's my idea: If you don't like the game, STOP PLAYING. No one needs to hear your reasoning, or your whining about being level 29. If you aren't having fun, GTFO. Period. No need to post your farewell, your reasons for leaving... just go!
